Dear visitor, if you know the answer to this question,
please post it. Thank you!

Using the JR pass on Hokutosei 2009/8/21
Hokkaido
Hi

I would be activating my JR Pass on 18 September and the final leg of my trip starts from Sapporo via the Hokutosei on 24 September as follows:

Sapporo 5:12 p.m. - Toya 7:33 p.m. - Hakodate 9:48 p.m. - Sendai 4:54 a.m - Ueno 9:41 a.m.

However the pass will expire on 24 September which implies the final legs of the train journey might be voided.

Pls kindly advise if this is true. or the reservation for the Hokutosei is valid for the entire length of the journey from Sapporo to Ueno.

Thanks!

I think so 2009/8/21
I would have thought that it was valid for a train boarded on the last day.
This guy says you can squeeze even more out of it by not leaving the station

All charges, some fares are required.... 2009/8/21
If you are still on the ride with your Japan Rail Pass [JR Pass] when the Pass expires at the midnight, then the Pass will be valid on JR fares until you get out through the station gate for the first time.

However, a JR Pass primarily does not cover any charge for a ride of utilizing a berth; in that case a JR Pass covers fare(s) only.
The Hokutosei has sorts of berth spaces, but it usually does not have seats; you will have to pay in advance at least 9,190 yen charges ( = Ltd. Express and berth charge).
And, the Hokutosei runs via two non-JR sections; so you will also have to pay 2,960 yen fares for the sections while you are aboard the train.

- Japan Rail Pass: Notes regarding use
Item 4 (including a word "berth") fully applies to your case.
Item 5 (including a word "overnight") is to be an answer to the core of your original questions.

As mentioned by omotenashi, Japan Rail Pass holders will have to pay a supplement fee of at least around 12,000 yen per person for using the Hokutosei:
