Not allowed to buy JR Pass in Dubai 2009/8/24
United Arab Emirates
Hi,

I intend to travel to Japan (Kyoto/ Osaka/ Tokyo/ some mountain ranges) from Sept 4th to Sept 20th.

But since I am booked on Emirates Airline, (NOT JAL) I am told my the local travel agents that i cannot buy the JR 7-day Pass!

Having found this out at a very late stage of planning, i am left wondering what to do?

please, anyone give me whatever suggestions, you may have, to get a pass

Thanx!

Although it might vary by country, it should not matter what airline you use. Have you tried another travel agency, or is it the only one authorized to sell rail passes in your country?

Buy from another agency 2009/8/24
It seems that all of the agencies that sell the JR pass in your country are affiliated with JAL and ANA, so they can't sell you a pass unless you're on a flight with one of those carriers.

You could buy from an agency in a third country and have it shipped to you.

Here's a list of places that sell exchange orders:

You can buy from any of the ones that aren't listed as affiliated with JAL or ANA.

try ANA or JAL offices 2009/8/24
I live in Bangkok. I bought the JR pass at the All Nippon Airlines office in Bangkok, although I flew Thai Airways to Japan. There was no problem at all. I'm sure there must be an ANA or JAL branch in Dubai.

JR PASS 2009/8/24
Hi,
If you want to buy JR PASS you don't have strictly use JAL or ANA.
Maybe your agent do not sell the JR PASS, because to purchase JR pass itself, you have to find the pointed agent who sell it.
Like if you are staying in Jakarta, you can go to JALan Tour to purchase it.
You only have to bring your passport and visa (if needed).
For more info : www.japanrailpass.net

Hope it can help you. If you still have any questions, i will try to answer as far as i know.

thank you 2009/8/24
Hi all, Thanx a lot for your replies. Even the local Japan Consulate says i need to have a JAL ticket to get a JR Pass - weird, huh?

what are the documents needed to buy this pass/ voucher from outside UAE - The Japanese Consulate wants me to check that - they feel even if i try to buy it from other cities, i may not be able to buy it or even worse use in Japan. OMG - what am i getting into here?

Regards

rail pass 2009/8/24
Inside Japan Tours (UK) sold a rail pass to a mate of mine when he was already overseas. They sent it to him in Japan, no questions asked.

Railpass / airpass 2009/8/24
SunnyDubai,
Reading your posts I have the feeling there is a misunderstanding. You are speaking of the 7 day JapanRAIL Pass for use on trains. It looks like your travel agency and the consulate are speaking of an AIRLINE Pass either affilated to Staralliance flights ( ANA ) or oneworld ( JAL )?
Buy the Exchange Order for the JR Rail Pass at any agency outside Japan and exchange it in Japan.

hi 2009/8/24
@Peter - Thanx for the mail. unfortunately, its the 7 day JapanRAIL Pass being referred to in my case. There seems to be some understanding between JAL and their local representative here in UAE that only JAL Airline passenger can get the JapanRAIL Pass.

Anyway, Thanx everyone for your mails. I am hoping to purchase this outside UAE.
