Oirase Stream & Tawadako 2009/9/5
Aomori
I'm planning to visit Oirase Stream & Towadako in first part of December and had planned to stay at Oirase Keiryu Hotel by the Oirase Stream for 2 nights. I want to walk the Oirase Stream. However, it seems that not only the JR bus does not operate in December, the Oirase Keiryu Hotal will also be closed from December. Can anyone advise me if this information is correct.

Would also be grateful for advice on the following:
1. Is it possible to walk both the Oirase Stream (all 14km or part) and Lake Towada in first part of December? I understand the boat service at Lake Towada is still open in December, is that true?
2. Other than Oirase Kieryu Hotel is there any other Hotel in the same location that is opened in December that will allow me to walk to Oirase Stream?
3. Any other suggestions for me to walk the whole 14km Oirase Stream or part during December?
4. I'm planning to stay 4 or 5 nights in Tohoku and want to do walking trips at secenic locations like lakes, streams, mountains, valleys, etc. Would be grateful for advice on where and how.
5. I will be staying at onsen ryokan for 4 or 5 nights. I'm looking at places with open air baths (female) that have beautiful scenery.

Grateful for your help & advice.
Thank You

The walking trail is probably covered under snow by December and it could be impossible to walk along it.

The JR buses run around the year, however. But it is true that the hotel is closed from December.

I understand the boat service at Lake Towada is still open in December, is that true?

Only the round course that starts and ends in Yasumiya, but not the connection between Nenokuchi and Yasumiya.

I'm planning to stay 4 or 5 nights in Tohoku and want to do walking trips at secenic locations like lakes, streams, mountains, valleys, etc. Would be grateful for advice on where and how.

December is generally bad timing for walking in northern Japan. In the southern Tohoku region, in lower elevations and along the Pacific coast, there is less snow.

Not sure December is the best time... 2009/9/22
A friend and I were on route 454 not far from Towadako and got caught in a blizzard. In Late April. I would think by December they have a lot of snow there.

A lot of Tohoku is very lovely, but in December it is going to be much more of a ski destination than a hiking destination.

Towada-ko/Oirase Stream 2009/9/22
JR bus still goes to Towada-ko in winter, but down to 2 daily runs from either Hachinohe or Aomori. Walking the Oirase trail in winter is not recommended. We were there during Feb. and there was heavy snow. The road was barely wide enough for 2-way traffic without any room for walking and the stream was also partly covered in snow.

Going to Towada-ko is worthwhile. Winter scenery there is great, and spending a night in one of the onsen hotels by the lake in relaxing. The bus to Towada-ko will pass through Oirase Stream and you can enjoy the view onboard the bus. It will even stop at several sites for you to take photos though you can't get off.
