Visiting Nikko 2009/9/6
Nikko
I am planning my trip to view the KOYO around mid October 2009.
My first stop would be Tokyo and I will go to Nikko as I looked at your KOYO forecast and I think I should head up West.
My question is that I have lots of time, my plan is to drive and spend a night or two at a onsen/ryokan on Lake Chuzenji and go up the road to Yudaki falls.
We are traveling as a couple and we have a week in Japan.
I would like to end my trip back in Tokyo to do some last minute shopping - so I have a few days on the road for sight seeing....any recommendation is highly appreciated.

West? Do you mean from central Nikko westwards into the Okunikko region? If yes, I agree. The best autumn colors in mid October will be in the Okunikko area and not down in central Nikko.

My question is that I have lots of time, my plan is to drive and spend a night or two at a onsen/ryokan on Lake Chuzenji and go up the road to Yudaki falls.

That sounds nice. But keep in mind that Nikko can get very crowded during the autumn leaf season, especially when the weather forecast is good and on weekends. I strongly recommend to make your trip to Nikko during the week. Avoid weekends and October 12, which is a national holiday. Even on weekdays, you better expect slow traffic around Nikko.

Between Nikko and Tokyo? What are your personal interests?

From Narita to Nikko 2009/9/6
Thanks Uji for your advice,
Can you please tell me if there any kinds of transportation directly from Narita Airport to Nikko?
I am arriving very early in the morning of Thursday so I shall try to avoid staying over weekends.
Is 2 days enough to stay and go around Nikko?
Thank you

There is no "direct" transportation from Narita to Nikko, but there is a bus from Narita airport to JR Utsunomiya station:
http://www.chibakotsu.co.jp/kousoku/marronnier.htm

From the bus timetable:
Narita #2 terminal bus stop - #1 bus stop - Utsunomiya station
8:10 - 8:15 - 11:00
9:40 - 9:45 - 12:30
It will be another 40 minutes' train ride from Utsunomiya on JR Nikko line to Nikko station.

OR, you can take Narita Express to Tokyo station, then change to Shinkansen to get to Utsunomiya (then Nikko line to Nikko).

If you want to see central Nikko, Lake Chuzenji area, Yudaki, etc., two days would be enough.

Um, I thought you said you wanted to drive "west" from Nikko? Nikko is to the north of Tokyo. What is your plan for the rest of the stay in Japan (just curious)?

Planing a trip to Nikko from Narita 2009/9/6
I am arriving Narita at 7am on Thursday,
1st plan # go straight to Nikko will stay in an Onsen/ryokan one night. Move around Nikko and perhaps stay in another onsen ryokan. Then on the third day which is a weekend move away from Nikko and perhaps drive down to Tokyo or take a train then maybe stop in Hakone for a night.
Then back to Tokyo and spend Sunday Monday in Tokyo,
When it is not so crowded.
2nd plan# Go to the Mt. five lakes area stay for 2 nights max. then go to Nikko for another 2 nights then back to Tokyo for another 2 nights.
which do u think it is better ?
Thanks

Both Hakone and Nikko are popular sightseeing areas, so there will be crowds over the weekend - you cannot avoid this.

Narita is to the east of Tokyo, Nikko is to the north, and Hakone is to the west, so you have to go through Tokyo/Shinjuku to travel between Hakone and Nikko.

If you are traveling in Nikko and Okunikko (Yudaki area), then I do not recommend driving - the roads may be crowded, and you also have to worry about parking. If you take the bus, no worries about parking. I feel that (both Uji and) I were under the impression that you were going to drive west FROM Nikko to somewhere else, where there is no simple public transport access, but that does not seem to be the case.

Counting from the day when you arrive (early morning) in Narita as day 1, how many days until you depart Japan, and what do you want to do in Tokyo?

Visiting Nikko 2009/9/6
I would like to leave Tokyo as my last stop before I go back home. I'd like to just stroll around, go to the fish market and shopping. Perhaps visiting the some parks for the Koyo - that is if it is not too soon for Tokyo around 23rd October.
