Hakone pass and JR pass 2009/9/6
Hakone
If I have the JR pass, and want to spend 1 day in the Hakone region - should I also purchase the Hakone pass? What does it give me that the JR pass dose not?
If the Hakone pass is advisable - where do I get it?
Are there other regional passes that I need to purchase eventhough I have the JR pass? Thanks

The Hakone pass gives you travel in the Hakone region. The JR pass does not, it simply gets you to Mishima or Odawara. You can buy the Hakone pass at either of the above stations when you get there. As for other regions.....what's the plan ?

Just to add - Hakone Free Pass comes in two different types.

One that you can buy from Shinjuku in Tokyo, which includes the return Odakyu Railway trip between Shinjuku - Hakone Yumoto, in addition to different means of transportation "within" Hakone area.

The other one is the type you buy at Odawara or Mishima (or a few other major stations) at a reduced price compared to the above, and does NOT include the Shinjuku - Hakone Yumoto trip. So this one is just for transportation "within" Hakone area.

As you have a JR pass, you already have the pass that covers the trip from Tokyo - Odawara on JR train. So you can use the JR pass to get to Odawara, then buy the Hakone Free Pass at 3,900 yen to ride cablecar, "tozan" (mountain-climbin) railway, etc. within the Hakone area to do the "round course." ENjoy!

Thanks a lot RodW and AK. All clear.
I will be in Kyoto, Nara, Okayama, Hiroshima, Takayama and Tokyo. Is there a spaecial pass for those areas that I should consider?

Your JR pass will cover all those areas although it's not all that comprehensive in the Osaka area.
There are a whole range of passes available for all of Japan. Their suitability is very much dependent on your schedule.
As a general rule the average tourist gets by very nicely with the JR pass and the odd ticket purchase for other railway companies that they my have to use.
As a for instance when you are in Osaka and would like to go to Koya you have to buy a Nankai Rwy ticket because JR does not go there.
