Visit Fushimi Inari at night Is it ok? 2009/9/9
Kyoto City
Hello... As I know Fushimi Inari is open all day all night so I'm thinking about visiting at about early evening time which might extend until it's dark.

What I wonder is wheter it's safe for two women to go there? I know that there will be no people going there (or few if very lucky).

Anyone has any suggestion, please?

Yes, should be 2009/9/9
Hello,

though nobody can give you a guarantee for it, I'd say that you should be safe there.
I've been to Fushimi Inari a few times when it was dark, and the (very) few people there always were more interested in walking the shrine than in other people. The only thing you might hear is a "konnichiha" now and then.

The atmosphere might be a bit eery, but, then again, it's kinda cool walking through the slightly illuminated paths.

Have fun!

Fushimi Inari 2009/9/10
One of the main reason to visit Fushimi Inari is to walk under thousands of vermillion coloured torii. The contrast of the colour against the dark greenery is gorgeous and, from a distance, one see the colour line snaking up hill through the trees. There is much point doing it at night!

Also at night one couldn't appreciate all the thousands of small shrines and their foxes, many of them with different expressions.
The walk is up and down a steep hill and has many steps in some parts and this could be dangerous. At night one would also miss the views over Kyoto way down below.

I wouldn't 2009/9/10
I personally wouldn't recommend it. The area is not well lit, many of the paths are not wide or smooth and are sometimes muddy and slippery, and even in Japan, it may not be a good idea to walk around in dark and deserted areas like parks etc. at night. If you do go, take a very good torch/flashlight, or you risk a sprained ankle.

Just use caution 2009/9/10
Yes, agree with what"umi2jp" said, Fushimi Inari Taisha is safe at night, just as most other places in Japan would be at night. As always use caution and common sense. Best to go in a group and during the early evening hours. Don't need to walk the whole walking path for a interesting night experience, just the lower area is fine. The lighting is poor so watch your step while walking slowly. The poor lighting is also a plus when taking photos as the shadows and darkened areas can show up in a photos as very eery and mysterious. Take the time to stop and listen to the interesting sounds at night. The area is very still, although sometimes a train, both JR and Keihan, will break the some-what silence. After finding how peaceful it is there at night, it seems worth the time to make at least a short visit at night, for each time that I have visited Kyoto.
