Himeji Castle 2009/9/10
Himeji
Anyone know the current state of repairs at Himeji? I am planning to visit at the end of September and have been told different things about the renovations and whetherit will still be worth visiting or not. Any up to date info would be appreciated

The renovation will last for 4-5 years. You can still visit but the exterior will be covered by a roofed scaffolding like a giant tent.

According to the information here, it seems that the view of the castle exterior would not be blocked until March 2010:

state of himeji on Oct 15 2009 2009/10/17
I was at Himeji castle on Oct 15 2009, and only one watch tower was covered in scaffolding. The MAIN castle was not covered up at this stage. However what we did do was when we got to Kyoto on Oct 13, we had the Tourist Bureau call someone (i assume the Himeji counterpart) to give us the most current update of the state of renovation. That way you can get the information you want to decide whether you are going to go there.
My kids thought Himeji was the highlight of the trip, after Disneyland Resort of course! The 3 hour free English tour through Himeji Castle with a voulunteer retired professional tour guide named Kenji was FABULOUS!!!! Without the tour, you just can't fully appreciate Himeji Castle.
