I am planning to visit at the end of September and have been told different things about the renovations and whetherit will still be worth visiting or not. The MAIN castle was not covered up at this stage. However what we did do was when we got to Kyoto on Oct 13, we had the Tourist Bureau call someone (i assume the Himeji counterpart) to give us the most current update of the state of renovation. That way you can get the information you want to decide whether you are going to go there. My kids thought Himeji was the highlight of the trip, after Disneyland Resort of course! The 3 hour free English tour through Himeji Castle with a voulunteer retired professional tour guide named Kenji was FABULOUS!!!!
