Narita Express to Ikebukuro 2009/9/14
Narita
Just a small question, I intend on taking the Narita Express train directly to Ikebukuro in order to save the inconvenience of changing trains. But after reading the forum and seeing the timetable, it seems as though most of the trains do not stop at Ikebukuro.

http://jreast-shinkansen-reservation.eki-net.com/pc/english/common/tim...

Does the symbols | and || mean that the train is skipping those stations?

And also, I will be arriving in Narita Airport at about 4.20pm via JAL, how long does it take to pass customs? I will be there on Thursday, 24th September.

Thank you.

It stops 2009/9/15
http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi

There are 13 services a day direct to Ikebukuro
It gets a tad inconvenient if you get down to the station just in time to hit one of those big gaps. IE 1445-1645 or in your case 1716-1848
It is possible that you will clear customs in time for the 1716. It really depends on how busy things are. I have gone through in 15' from landing to the station but at other times it has been over an hour. There are no definites I'm afraid.
You didn't mention a JR pass. If you were to just miss the 1716 you have the option of waiting or not using the pass that day and take the cheaper Keisei Skyliner or even the Ltd Express to Nippori and change to the Yamanote Loop there. Not much fun with luggage.
OR if you do have a JR pass and want to use it you could take the NEX to Shinagawa and change to a Yamanote there. You will see from the timetable that there are alternate NEX trains.

How to go to Narita-Airport 2009/9/15
I recomend you how to go to Narita-Airport. You sould take KEISEI-Rapid-Exp (not Skyliner). Because JR-line (especialy NARITA-exp) is very high cost. And you can not catch a lot of it stoping in Ikebukuro. You sould go to Ueno to take YAMANOTE-line and change to KEISEI-line.

And you have to arive to Narita-Airport about 2:30pm. It will take 1 and half hour from Ikebukuro to Narita-Airport. Time to pass through the customs clearance depends on the number of people. (I think it is almost 1 hour. ) But The check-in counter closes faster more than it.

I usually take the keisei ltd exp + Yamanote to Ikebukuro, it isn't that much more inconvenient, plus it's a way lot cheaper.

Airport limo??? 2009/9/15
Maybe the airport limo is an option depending where you stay: not overly cheap, but can be direct to your hotel, and a nice way to start you time in a new city, particularly arriving in the evening, when activating a pass may not be worthwhile for just the one trip that day, without worrying about transferring luggage etc

Thank you for all the replies, thing is, the airport limo doesnt stop at the place where I am staying. I was thinking of taking the Narita Express so I wouldnt have to change trains, quite afraid of getting lost.

If I were to take the Keisei Express I will have to change trains once at the Yamanote Line? Is changing trains confusing?

Thank you for your reply Vintage Red, but I am asking on how to get from the Narita Airport to Ikebukuro, not the other way round.

Matthew,
- Limo bus to Ikebukuro only stops at Sunshine Prince hotel and Crown Plaza Metropolitan hotel anyway (this hotel is close to the south exit on west side of JR Ikebukuro station), so if your hotel is close to either one of them, you *could* take a ride on it.

- If you take Keisei Limited Express, it's true, it's only 1,000 yen or so to Nippori, then you change trains to JR Yamanote Line. You just go over the bridge that spans across several platforms, goes through one gate, find "Yamanote Line for Ikebukuro/Shinjuku" platform, so it's not that complicated :). Keisei Limited Express is a regular commuter train, so long seats and no particular storage space for big luggage. But no problem coming FROM the airport.
- If you take the Keisei Skyliner, it costs 1,920 yen to Nippori, and you have front facing rows of two seats, and there is some storage space for big luggage.

- To make the Keisei to JR Yamanote line connection, you can buy a connecting ticket already at Narita airport - the JR portion is only 160 yen (I believe) additional.

Only 1,500 yen with Suica & N'EX.... 2009/9/15
Yes, it's 160 yen from Nippori to Ikebukuro by JR-East.
- When changing at Nippori, be sure to take a train at Track 11 for Ikebukuro / Shinjuku, as is mentioned by AK.
- I don't recommend your choosing the course with a Keisei Ltd. Express and a JR Yamanote Line train, unless your plane arrives as scheduled (or earlier) and you smoothly pass through immigration procedures. If your flight and/or immigration procedures are delayed, your train, except for a JR Narita Express train and a Keisei Skyliner, may fall under evening rush.

A Suica & N'EX package is available to a non-Japanese traveler, which includes a discount ticket. This ticket, virtually costing1,500 yen, can work as a Narita Express [N'EX] ticket from NRT and also as a one-day fare ticket to Ikebukuro (without a stopover or turning back).
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/index.html

: I will be arriving in Narita Airport at about 4.20pm

Then presumably you can try booking Narita Express 36 / 38 / 40 / 42.
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/travel_info/service_center/index.html
- Narita Express 36 and 38 stop at Ikebukuro. (Narita Express 36 has two parts for different directions until Tokyo).
- Taking Narita Express 40, you can change at Shinagawa to a train on Yamanote Line's outer loop (Track 2), on which you will get to Ikebukuro in about 30 minutes.
- Taking Narita Express 42, you can change at Shibuya to a Local or Rapid train coming later into the same track (= Track 3), on which you will get to Ikebukuro in 10 minutes or so.
- When a train you're going to catch at Shinagawa / Shibuya, wait for a next one if time permits. Trains for Ikebukuro are running until around midnight, and the discount ticket is valid even for the last one.

: I wouldnt have to change trains, quite afraid of getting lost.

I feel no fear of your getting lost as to any of the three transfer options (Nippori, Shibuya, Shinagawa).

: the symbols | and || mean that the train is skipping those stations

Here the symbol | means "not stopping at" and the symbol || means "not via."

CORRECTION: typo 2009/9/15
NOT: When a train you're going to catch at Shinagawa / Shibuya,
BUT: When a train you're going to catch at Shinagawa / Shibuya is too crowded,

NOT: the three transfer options (Nippori, Shibuya, Shinagawa).
BUT: the three transfer options (Nippori, Shinagawa and Shibuya).

Thanks.

Thank you omotenashi, as for Track 36, I noticed that there are two trains. How will I be able to know which is stopping at Ikebukuro and which one is not via || Ikebukuro?

RE: Two-direction N'EX train 2009/9/15
All N'EX seats require reservation. You can fine your seat by the car number and the seat number. And each car shows the destination on its body for passengers to check before boarding.

By the way: all N'EX seats are non-smoking seats.

Okay, thanks! I'll try to take the NEX+Suica Package at the airport if possible. In the event that there arent any trains going to Ikebukuro at the time I clear customs then I'll just take the Keisei train.

Unrelated, but is there anything much to do in Ikebukuro at night? Because I'll be staying there for 9days in total.
