Kyoto advice 2009/9/15
Kyoto City
We are going to Japan in October and we planned to go to Kyoto from 8th -13th October. But can't get a single hotel for this period. Does anybody know why?! The Sunday is particuarly booked up. I know its a publci holiday on the Monday but other cities like Hiroshima and Osaka have rooms avaiable.

Can anybody suggest any alternatives?

We are in Japan for a total of 11 nights

We have 4 nights booked in Tokyo
Then planned to have 5 nights in Kyoto (with day trips to Nara, Hiroshima Himenja) before returning to have one final night in Tokyo then 1 at a airport hotel.

We have a rail pass for 7 days.

You could book a hotel near Shin-Osaka or JR Osaka Stn and take the JR Kyoto Line to Kyoto, it's only 30mins and covered by the JR Pass
Plsu accomodations in Osaka tend to be cheaper than Kyoto.

budget? 2009/9/15
Depends on the budget: we stayed at the Granvia in JR Osaka station: wonderfully convenient, and great for shopping and cheap food.

Kyoto in oct 2009/9/15
Hi, Kyoto is THE top sightseeing destination in Japan. Oct and Nov are one of the busiest times of year, and the entire city does literally get fully booked for a lot of this time, esp weekends, and esp holiday weekends. Osaka and Hiroshima are business cities, so far less sightseers. You may have to commute from Osaka if you want to see Kyoto over the holiday weekend.
