Tsukiji tuna auction 2009/9/15
Tokyo 23-ku
My family and I would like to go to Tsukiji in the early morning to witness the tuna auction (would be there around 5am). We will be staying near JR Shinagawa.

1) Will the trains be running that early?
2) If not, what is approximate costfor a taxi for 4 people from Shinagawa to Tsukiji?
3) Has anyone taken a guided tour of Tsujiki for the tuna auction tour and would you recommend it?
4) After the fishmarket, we were going to visit Hamarikyu Garden. Are there any other attractions in that vicinity?

1. No, no trains to get you there by 5am
Although not banned, my understanding is that tourists are preferred to not go to the auctions. We just go to the market afterwards, later on when transport is running: still see massive tuna, being carved up with electric saws, as well as loads of amazing seafood.
4. Walk through Hama Rikyu and go on the Sumida Gawa cruise boat to Asakusa: great way to see Tokyo from the water.
Can't help with 2&3: sorry!!

fish market 2009/9/16
its worth taking a taxi, its a bit complicated to get there on train.

the taxi will cost you about 3500 yen. but you can fit 4 in the taxi, so it is still not that expendsive.

they dont like tourist to go to the auction, but they will probably not stop you.

Try not to get in the way and be courteous when touring (it is their work) and you should be ok.

Thank you everyone for your help. After doing some research, we are considering going to Odaiba after visiting Hamarikyu Garden.
1) Is there a boatride from Sumida or nearby pier that will take us to Odaiba?
2) If so, how often does it run, how long is the ride and whatis cost?
3) If no boat, what train would we take to getfrom Hamarikyu area to Odaiba and how long and cost?
