Which train passes for our itinerary?

Dear visitor, if you know the answer to this question,
please post it. Thank you!

Which train passes for our itinerary? 2009/9/16
3 of us are traveling in December/January, going in a 2-week period from Narita to Tokyo (day 1), to Kanazawa, (days 2-5) to Kyoto (days 6-10), back to Tokyo (days 11-13) then Narita. (day 14).

Do you all recommend getting 7-day JR passes that will then get us as far as Kanazawa & Kyoto, or is a 14 day pass a better deal?

Do the JR passes work anywhere inside of these cities, or do we need separate subway passes for them? Thanks for any tips!

Brad, rather than somebody else doing the figuring out for you use
http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi
It will give you all the fares. You can then work out the trips against the cost of either pass configuration. That way you can figure out the best deal according to your plans.
A JR pass is not valid on subways but it will get you around most of Tokyo above ground. It just depends on exactly where you want to go.
Osaka usually requires a fair bit of "other railway". The JR network there is nowhere near as comprehensive as it is in Tokyo

For the most part you won't need any other passes for local city travel except maybe the 500yen 1-day bus pass for Kyoto

In Kyoto, unless you are headed to Fushimi inari or Uji or something like that you won't be using the JR pass much.

Kanazawa you will definately not be using the JR pass for local city travel.

Probably only Tokyo.

As the above commenter said, use http://www.hyperdia.com to figure out what trains you need to take and calculate your costs on JR trains to see if it's worth it

Or you can consider taking a highway bus instead to save money.
