Takayama Festival 2009/9/18
Takayama
I'm going to be in the Japan during Oct 9th,10th. I was wondering is it worth it to check out the Takayama Festival. It says it's listed as the third largest festival. I got a few questions about this.

1) How do I get there?
2) What time should i go?
3) What else is there to do in Takayama?
4) Is this a day trip? or just half a day?

Hi,

We have been to the Takayama Spring festival, it was verry nice. Street parades all over the place. We visited during day time, all day long there are things to do, I do not know how it was in the evening. I would suggest you make it a day trip this is much more relaxed than half a day.

You get to Takayama by train and walk into the city very easily.

Have Fun!

Hida Takayama 2009/9/18
They will be showing off their beautifully crafted Japanese floats during this festival. I've been to Takayama 3 times, never attended the festival but I enjoyed the morning market trips, the traditional shop houses, the sakura in Spring and the autumn foliage.
Takayama is well-known for its Hida beef, special miso cooked on leaf, river fish and mountainous preserved vegetables.
You can stay either one nite here or Gero, a few stops before Takayama. Gero is an onsen place. It's one of the 3 most famous onsens in Japan.

Have fun!

I have only driven to Takayama so I'm not all that sure but I believe most people with a JR pass take the Shinkansen to Nagoya and then the Hida View train to Takayama. You can also take a train to Matsumoto and then a bus to Takayama.
I think the festival is great and I'd go see it. The evening is fun because there is a parade during which all the beautiful floats are loaded with lanterns and pulled through the streets. You can see a ridiculous number of photos I took here:

It's really great to stay overnight but if you haven't booked accommodation by now it'll be really tough to find.

Takayama autumn festival 2009/9/19
If you are talking about going for the festival this year, I don't think you can find accommodation in Takayama at this late date. In 2007, we booked almost 3 months ahead and yet my wife and I could only get 2 separate single rooms.

If you are thinking of a daytrip to Takayama, it depends where you are using as a base. If you want to stay near Takayama, consider staying in Furukawa which is only 15 min. by train from Takayama. It would be a good idea to stay in Furukawa if you go for the evening parade.

The autumn festival is smaller in scale compared to the summer festival. The parade only goes through the streets on the east bank of Miyagawa River. On Oct 9 there are both day and evening parade while on Oct 10 there is only day parade. Day parade on Oct 9 is from 13.00-15.30, night parade is from 18.00-21.00. Day parade on Oct 10 starts 9.00; There is a route map of the parade here, but the info. is only in Japanese:

I know I didn't plan this so well. ALL hotels, hostels, ryokans are booked :( Is this worth going from tokyo @6am and arriving at 10:30am and then leaving at Takayama @ 4:30pm to arrive back in tokyo at 9:30pm?

It says it's listed as the third largest festival.

That is a misunderstanding. The festival is ranked as one of Japan's three most famous festivals that feature festival floats. Not the third largest.

1) How do I get there?

How to get to Takayama:

Where in Takayama the festival takes place:

2) What time should i go?

The best visit in my opinion is from around noon of the first day until around 10pm to see the evening parade.

What else is there to do in Takayama?

Here you go:

Is this a day trip? or just half a day?

If you skip the evening parade, it can be done as a one day trip from a nearby city, such as Nagoya.
