By early November, autumn colors will be descending into lower elevations of Nikko. Most of the color will have disappeared in the higher elevations, e.g. around Lake Chuzenji. Ryuzu no taki, in particular, will be naked. Here is a report of November 5 of last year: http://www.japan-guide.com/blog/koyo/081105.htmlBut in the lower elevations of the Irohazaka and in central Nikko, you will probably be able to see some autumn colors. If you don't have a Japan Rail Pass, I recommend to use a Nikko Free Pass: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_002.html
