Tokyo 2 Day Metro Pass? 2009/9/23
Narita
Hello! Im traveling to Japan in the next coming months. Im curious about the 2 consecutive day pass you can purchase at Narita Airport for a discount price of like 980Y or something. Is it like the JR pass where I will be able to specify when I want it to be activated? Me and my friend were considering buying two each since we will be in Tokyo for 4 days not including our landing date. How do you validate the pass, do you pass through the manned gates at stations as well?

No. You activate with first usage, i.e. when you first insert the pass into a ticket gate. It will then be valid on the day of first use and the following day.

2-day Tokyo Metro Open Pass 2009/9/23
http://www.tokyometro.jp/global/en/ticket/narita.html#narita1

The pass does not need to be validated and you don't necessarily need to use once you buy it. It's activated once you start using it and it's good for 2 consecutive days. It's used on the automatic wicket gates, not the manned gate.

Note that it is only good on Tokyo Metro Lines, not the Toei Lines. Also it's doubtful whether they would sell you 2 passes for each person. You can ask and I would be interested to know whether it is possible too.

Vitten,

Suica can be used on Tokyo Metro, Toei, Yurikamome(monorail) etc. You just need to buy either Suica or Pasumo, not both.

Suica or Pasmo 2009/9/23
TS,

Thanks for that. Suica doesn't make this clear at all. So as a tourist I can buy a suica card for 3,500 yen at Narita airport, use the narita express to get me to Tokyo station, then use 1,500 yen credit on the metro, inner JR lines, toei lines and the yurikamome line (around Tokyo Bay) or many convenience stores and get 500 yen back (depsoit when I leave)?
I'm just surprised that you can use it on the metro and toei and yurikamone lines as none of their websites mention this and you cannot top your suica card at anywhere other than convenience stores or JR stations - not at Metro/Toei stations.
Sorry to repeat this but just wanted to make sure.

What you just described is the SPECIAL SUICA & NEX PACKAGE that only foreign passport holders can buy.

Anyone can buy a regular suica card.

It is a Narita Express ticket discounted plus a Suica card with 1500 yen credit.

The Suica card can be used ANYWHERE PASMO is accepted.

Ok just to keep that simple, if you see PASMO sign SUICA is OK. 100%.

Since all private railroads and subways use PASMO thats why you don't see SUICA mentioned as much, however they are pretty much the same for the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

SUICA = PASMO

You can recharge Suica cards at PASMO machines and recharge PASMO at Suica machines. Again it's the same.

As for the Metro Pass, as mentioned, it is activated once you insert it into a machine, no need to go through manned gate. The 9 lines of Tokyo Metro covers a good deal of Central Tokyo, some places JR doesn't even go to. I think the 2 day version is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

Tokyo Metro ok 2009/9/23
We purchased a week's worth of single and two-day Tokyo Metro tickets on arrival at the Narita airport and didn't have any trouble at all, and we didn't have to buy any additional tickets during that week either as the Tokyo Metro lines more or less covered all the places we visited.
