Dear visitor, if you know the answer to this question,
please post it. Thank you!

riding shinkasen for the first time 2009/9/23
I will be traveling on the Nozomi Shinkasen from Shinagawa to Kyoto on a Wednesday. I would like to be in Kyoto as early as possible in the morning butwant to avoid being caughtin rush hour.
1) When would be the best time to ride the train to avoid crowds during rush hour?
2) Is there a time schedule in English at Shinagawa station?
3) Would you recommend paying for a reserved seat vs non reserved?
4) Since this is my first time on the Shinkansen and I am a little nervous about the process, should I forward my luggage to the hotel in Kyoto? I have a medium size luggage with a backpack and I am worried there will not be room on the train.

I don't think the Shinkansen will have much of a rush hour, but purchasing a reserved seat could make you feel better, if you want.

I never had to buy a reserved seat for the Shinkansen. There have always been plenty of non-reserved seats available. If you do buy a non-reserved ticket and sit in a reserved seat, you can either move or they will charge you the difference.

1) Before 7am, but the crowds on Shinkansen train are not as terrible as those on local or rapid trains in Greater Tokyo Area.

2) here you are.

3) n/a

4) Shinkansen is one of the most spacious trains in Japan. You dont have to forward your baggage if you dont mind carrying it.

buy unreserved seat
buy reserved seat in the inside of car if crowded

I have not taken a ride on a Nozomi shinkansen. The Kodama and Hikari versions are already very comfortable.

To pamper yourself further, you can buy some bento at the train station before boarding the train. You have more choices on food than relying on the food available on the train.

Thank you for your responses. I will have 3 other people with me and we want to be on the Mt Fuji side of the train.

1) Should we get reserved seats to be on the Mt Fuji side of the train?
2) How many seats go across the train,i.e. is it similiar to a plane where there are 1 or 2 aisles running down the middle? We would like to be as close to a window as possible.
3) If we left Shinagawa about 9am-930am, will we be caught in a crowd of people? We wantto be in Kyoto by lunch time if possible.

May I also ask when travelling along the bullet train journey from Tokyo to Hiroshima, where (ie between which stations) can I see Mt Fuji?
Thanks.

1) N/A
2) There are 2 seats on the right side and 3 seats on the left when you travel westbound from Tokyo.
3) No. I think it's ok

You will see Mt. Fuji between Mishima and Shin-Fuji.

It would have to be an exceptionally clear day to see it. Most of the time it's covered by clouds, I wouldn't keep my hopes up on it though.

Hi Ts,
Kodama trains stop at Mishima and Shin-Fuji but not Hikari trains.
I will be taking Hikari 462 from ShinOsaka back to ShinYokohama. Would I be able to see Mt Fuji between Odawara and ShinYokohama stations?
Thanks.

yes 2009/9/26
Kodama, Hikari and Nozomi run on the same track. So yes you will see it between Nagoya and Odawara(after passing Shizuoka station).
