Nikko in Mid-Dec - Rotemburo? 2009/9/26
Nikko
Hi all

Need the advice of all of you again.
Planning a trip in mid December to Tokyo for a few nights and one night in Nikko.

1) Will there be snow in Nikko then?
2) I've never been there and would like to find a reasonably priced ryokan (15,000 yen and below per person) with an open-air hotspring (bathing in the snow!) and good, traditional Japanese meals, any recommendations?

3) Any other tips about must-see sights and things to take note of esp. in December would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Will there be snow in Nikko then?

Usually there is no snow or not a lot of snow in the town of Nikko in mid December. There is a higher chance of snow in the higher elevations of Okunikko, but even there it is usually just a few centimeters, if at all.

Thanks Uji.

Maybe it's not the best time to visit Nikko until end December then?

Any other places around Tokyo that might be good? Kamakura or Yamanashi?

Thanks!

Nikko, especially central Nikko, generally does not get a lot of snow throughout the winter. But for a higher chance of snow, you better visit sometimes between mid January and late February. Even then, it is possible that there is no considerable amount of snow.
