Length of time for a day trip in Nikko 2009/10/1
Nikko
On a day trip from Shinagawa, with a JR Pass so via Utsunomiya, how long should we allow to see the main sites in Nikko with a 1000Y Combined pass plus extras for the sleeping cat, 3 monkeys, mausoleum etc.
We accept we will not have time to see the Kegon falls or lake Chuzenji.
We would hope to have a ramen-type lunch stop.
Thank you.

Travel pace differs greatly between people. People who travel at a quick pace and prefer to see things only superficially can see all the main sights of central Nikko in two hours. Add 1-3 hours for access and breaks.

For people who prefer a slower travel pace, I recommend around four hours for seeing the sights, not including access and breaks.

It really depends but 2009/10/2
I think Kegon Falls should be doable :)

We've been on a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo, starting from Shinjuku/Ikebukuro on JR+Tobu train (we live in Tokyo so no JR Pass available to us), took the bus up to one end of the Chuzenji Lake (the end closest to Nikko town) and done a short walk by the Lake Chunzenji, and had a good look at Kegon Falls, then taking the bus down to visit Toshogu Shrine and a few other shrines around it, as well as the cat and the three monkeys and the bridge, at a no-rush, good comfortable pace.

I believe we got to Tobu Nikko station around 9 in the morning, and left for Tokyo on a train departing Nikko around 4:30 in the afternoon.

A couple years ago in october/2005 we took the bus from the lake back to Nikko where we stayed. We had to line up for almost two hours before we could get on a bus. I do not know if this normal. Maybe somebody has some more resent experience.

OK 2009/10/4
Thanks for that : we will probably only go to Nikko , as originally planned, and leave scenery for another time and place. Our interest is definitely Nikko and the shrines and temples: we'd rather allow 4-5 hours for that and not be rushed.
