November driving in Takayama 2009/10/10
Takayama
We intend to rent a car in Takayama for 2 days to visit ShinHotaka, Shirakawago & Gokayama in late November. But recently we found out there will be chances of snow in those area. Is it dangerous to drive when snowing? What things we have to consider(eg. snow chains or 4WD)? What weather to expect in late November in those area?

Is it dangerous to drive when snowing?

If you are not even aware of the potential dangers of driving in snow, I recommend that you do not drive in a region where there is a relatively high chance of snow.

What weather to expect in late November in those area?

I believe there is a high chance of snow in the Okuhida region and a moderate chance of snow in the Takayama and Shirakawago regions.

Fortunately, public transportation tends to be good in Takayama, Shirakawago and Okuhida (except Gokayama), so I recommend that you use buses.

How about over 6 - 13 nov?

It is very unlikely that you will encounter snow covered roads around Shirakawago and Takayama that early, but temperatures can drop below freezing in the nights. I am not sure about the Okuhida region. Because of its higher elevation, I think there is a higher chance of snow and freezing temperatures, but probably unlikely to encounter snow covered roads.

Around Kanazawa and the Noto Peninsula it is highly unlikely to encounter snow at that time of the year.
