Places to see Shinkansen at full speed 2009/10/12
Hello,

I will be in Tokyo for 4 days, Hakone, and also Kyoto for 3 days. I was wondering if there are any good spots to watch the bullet trains fly by in speed. Kind of an odd question, but certainly have been interested after seeing youtube videos...guess I am a kid at heart!

At the Odawara station, do you have to have a ticket to have access to the platform? I guess I assume you do. I am taking the romance car to Hakone-Yumoto and back.

Thanks!

Odawara 2009/10/12
You can get a platform ticket to access the platform. Odawara is not a bad spot and whilst I am not sure I suspect the maximum speed you will see there will only be about 200=220km/h. I have a few videos on YouTube. This one opens at Odawara http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqqKA_HI-O8&feature=channel_page
For the highest speeds you need to be west of Shinosaka on the Sanyo section.
Odawara is the first station out of Tokyo that actually has non stopping trains so it is the best bet if you are time poor and certainly if you are going to be there enroute to Hakone.

What you could do is that since Hakone Free Pass (I assume you will have one?) will get you to Odawara, maybe on the way back from Hakone-Yumoto to Shinjuku, you can take an earlier local train from Hakone-Yumoto to Odawara, then buy a ticket just to get onto the JR Shinkansen platform, then watch one zip right by Odawara station (not too many Shinkansen stop at Odawara), then get on the Romance car (the one you'll have reserved) back to Shinjuku. Or do that on your way to Hakone-Yumoto; take your reserved Romance car only as far as Odawara.

It's true it might not be at top speed, but Odawara would be a good place to watch one :)

Thanks for all of your guy's answer! 140 yen isn't bad at all. I actually leave tomorrow and am just super excited.

If you go on a platform you HAVE to stand a couple of yards/meters in front of the train. The train will start and by the time the end of the train pas you by it will be a blur! unfortunately a photo will be also a blur and too much in close up.

The ideal spot would be on a road by a line in a suburban or rural area . Check a detailed map or, better still, try to follow one of the Shinkansen lines on Google earth to find a possible spot.....of course this mean spending a whole day to go there wait for a couple of trains, go back to wherever you stay..
