I didn't look at the map before posting so I apologize if this if off-base, but Kakunodate is a lovely little town with some old samurai houses. No onsen, unfortunately, but I considered it well worth a stop when I was there. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/regional/akita/kakunodate.html There are some wonderful walking streets that should be great in fall color. I stayed at this hotel: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/kakunodate/H45032.html and the restaurant offered some of the best Italian food I had while I was in japan - I know it sounds crazy, but it was a great break from the usual ryokan fare. The hotel was traditional yet with modern furnishings.
