Shirakawago by bus 2009/10/15
Shirakawa
Hi, I will be going to Shirakawago - Ogimachi village from Gifu by Gifu Bus. After that I will be heading to Takayama by Nouhibus.

1. Does Gifu Bus stop @ Shirakawago bus stop or Ogimachi bus stop?

2. Which bus stop should I go to take the Nouhibus to Takayama?

Question 1 2009/10/15
Sorry, my question (1) meant to ask which bus stop does the Gifubus stops at? Is it at Shirakawago bus stop or the Omgimachi bus stop?

They stop at Shirakawago bus stop before terminating at the Shirakawa village hall (not convenient for tourists).

Which bus stop should I go to take the Nouhibus to Takayama?

Most Nohi Buses use Shirakawago bus stop:

Luggage 2009/10/16
Hi Uji, so glad to hear from you. Thanks for sharing the information.

While on the issue of highway bus, do you know if one is allowed to take luggage along? Is there a limit to the size of the luggage?

Thanks.

Rgds,

There is a luggage room for large luggage and small luggage can be brought into the bus. If it is busy, there might be a limit of one big piece of luggage per person.

Bus vs. train 2009/10/16
Hi Uji,

Thanks again!

I've just found out that there is no direct bus from Gifu to Shirakawago :( . Instead, I will now travel from Gifu to Takayama directly and then do a day trip to Shirakawago from Takayama.

For the journey from Gifu to Takayama, I can either take JR train or Gifubus. I noticed that they both take 2 hours each. Which one would you recommend, train or bus? :)

Shirakawa-go 2009/10/16
If you are travelling in the daytime, take the train from Gifu to Takayama which is quite a scenic ride.

If you are doing a daytrip to Shirakawa-go from Takayama, buying a 4300 yen roundtrip ticket will save you a bit. A one-way ticket is 2400 yen (2007). Ideally reserve your seat the day beforehand. The bus terminal in Takayama is just on your left as you step out the JR station east exit.

Reserve bus seat at Gifu 2009/10/17
Hi William, it's good to hear from you again! Thanks for the advice, train it is. : )

I'm hoping to go Shirakawago on the day I arrive at Takayama, so in order for me to reserve the bus seat a day in advance, I'll have to do it in Gifu. I understand that Nouhibus runs the buses in Takayama. Is there a Nouhibus counter at the Gifu Bus Terminal?

Btw, I'm having a hard time trying to find out information from the various bus companies (Gifubus, Nouhibus and Alpico) due to my limited Japanese. The staff who answered the enquiry line could not speak English at all and many of my website enquiry went unanswered. Can I take this as an indication that very few local speak English in that region and I should equip myself with conversation guide before the trip?
