Hyogo
Hi, I will be in Japan soon and will be spending the night in Kinosaki. My questions are;
1)How can I get from Kinosaki to Hiroshima and how long will it take?

2)How can I get from Kinosaki to JR Hakata station and how long will that take?

Thank you

RE: from Kinosaki to Hiroshima 2009/10/16
: 1)How can I get from Kinosaki to Hiroshima and how long will it take?

: The gateway station to Kinosaki district is now Kinosakionsen Station. (It was renamed in 2005. ''Onsen'' means spa, hot spring.)

: There are only 3 Hamakaze trains to Himeji in one day, only 1 in the morning. And, only small numbers of Shinkansen trains for Hiroshima stop at Himeji.

: To tour Hiroshima City on the same day, the best combination requires about 3 + 1/2 hours:
Kinosakionsen 07:19 Ltd. Express Hamakaze 2 --
09:10 Himeji (transfer to Shinkansen) 09:45 Hikari 553 -- 10:48 Hiroshima.

: Departing later at 08:05 or at 09:10, you can get to Hiroshima in about 4 + 3/4 hours by a combination of local trains and a Shinkansen Hikari train:
Kinosakionsen 08:05 Local --
08:17 Toyooka 08:27 Local (Relay; destined to Fukuchiyama) --
08:56 Wadayama 09:10 Local -- 10:07 Teramae 10:47 Local --
11:32 Himeji (transfer to Shinkansen) 11:52 Hikari 559 -- 12:54 Hiroshima;
Kinosakionsen 09:10 Local --
09:22 Toyooka 09:25 Local (Relay; destined to Fukuchiyama) --
09:53 Wadayama 10:38 Local -- 11:32 Teramae 11:36 Local --
12:16 Himeji (transfer to Shinkansen) 12:52 Hikari 563 -- 13:54 Hiroshima.

: Fare and charges (per adult):
Fare: 6.090 yen;
A charge for the Hamakaze ride: 680 yen for a non-reservation seat, 830 to 1030 yen for a reserved seat, if you purchase all the tickets for this trip in advance;
A charge for the Shinkansen Hikari ride: 3,250 yen for a non-reservation seat, 3,560 to 3,960 yen for a reserved seat.

Further info 2009/10/16
Have you made a draft itinerary for your journey?
Presumably the section Kinosakionsen - Hiroshima will be a part of a longer leg by JR rail;
if so, you will pay the fare for the leg, not for this section separately.

The fare and charges for Hamakaze and Hikari can be all covered by a Japan Rail Pass.

more questions :o( 2009/10/16
Thanks for the answers guys!!
My plan was to leave Kinosaki onsen around 11 (since we are staying at ryokan and want to eanjoy breakfast and give ourselves a small break in our hectic itinerary)
We are planning to spend the night in Hiroshima so that we don't have to see everything in one day.
The plan so far is:
day 1-Kinosaki-Hiroshima
day 2- Hiroshima(see Miyajima) and travel to Fukuoka
Is that reasonable or will it be hard to get to Hakata from Hiroshima? I've posted my full itinerary in a different post, but it's not up yet for some reason.
Again thanks for the help, I'm very lost..:O)

RE: more questions 2009/10/17
: day 1-Kinosaki-Hiroshima
: day 2- Hiroshima(see Miyajima) and travel to Fukuoka
: Is that reasonable or will it be hard to get to Hakata from Hiroshima?

: Hiroshima Station - Miyajima: 1 hour or less on a train, on foot, then on a ferry.
: Hiroshima Station - Hakata Station: about 1 + 1/4 hour on a Shinkansen Hikari or Nozomi train.

: My plan was to leave Kinosaki onsen around 11

- Option A: Visiting Hiroshima City before heading to Miyajima;

Kinosakionsen 11:41 Local (destined to Fukuchiyama) --
12:39 Wadayama 12:53 Local -- 13:46 Teramae 13:49 Local --
14:30 Himeji (transfer to Shinkansen) 14:52 Hikari (Rail Star) 569 --
15:54 Hiroshima.

- Option B: Heading to Miyajima before visiting Hiroshima City;

- - B-1: When you can choose Nozomi;

Kinosakionsen 10:21 Local --
10:33 Toyooka 11:03 Local (Relay; destined to Fukuchiyama) --
11:39 Wadayama 12:03 Local -- 12:55 Teramae 12:59 Local --
13:42 Himeji (transfer to Shinkansen) 14:00 Nozomi 109 --
14:58 Hiroshima.

- - B-2: When you go with a Japan Rail Pass (, therefore you can not choose Nozomi);

Kinosakionsen 10:32 Ltd. Express Kinosaki 4 --
13:03 Kyoto (# to Track 5) 13:15 Special Rapid (destined to Himeji) --
13:38 Shin-Osaka (transfer to Shinkansen) 13:59 Shinkansen Hikari (Rail Star) 567 --
15:28 Hiroshima.
# Ltd. Express Kinosaki 4 arrives at Track 31 in a platform connected to that of Track 0.
From Track 0 you can go to Track 5 via a pathway above the platforms.

can i do this? 2009/10/18
I went on hyperdia and it told me to do this

take Ltd. Exp Hamakaze to Himej
at Himeji switch to Nozomi which will go all the way to Hiroshima

If I do have a jr pass(i know I can't take Nozomi train), but to spare time and countless transfers, can I follow that option and just pay the fare for the nozomi train?

Yes, but the fare for the Nozomi portion would be the full fare, i.e. 7560 yen for and unreserved seat. Instead take one of the direct Hikari trains from Himeji to Hiroshima. There is at least one train per hour. And in the future try searching in Hyperdia with the "excepts NOZOMI" box checked to get shinkansen routes that are JR Pass compatible.

RE: can i do this? 2009/10/18
You can, but a Japan Rail Pass covers nothing if you take a Nozomi, neither the fare for the section or the Shinkansen charge.

With a Japan Rail Pass, detouring around Shin-Osaka (as in Option B-1), you can get to Hiroshima on 2 or 3 trains.

Hyperdia settings:
- Start point: KINOSAKIONSEN ;
- Destination: HIROSHIMA ;
- Passed point: FUKUCHIYAMA , SHINOSAKA ;
- Route to use: Shinkansen (excepts NOZOMI) , LIMITED EXPRESS .

Hyperdia suggests a transfer to Shinkansen in Kyoto within 15 minutes, but I would choose Special Rapid (as long as I can secure enough time in Shin-Osaka), because I think a transfer to Special Rapid must be far easier.

By the way, isn't it possible to rearrange your itinerary to avoid moving Kinosakionesen - Hiroshima?
Both Kinosakionesen and Hiroshima are more easily accessible from / to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka than from / to Himeji by JR rail....

day 8- Hiroshima- Fukuoka
day 9- Go to Korea
days 10 thru 13-Korea
day 14- from Korea back to Kyoto

RE: Your plan 2009/10/23
The renovation work on the Main Keep of Himeji Castle will be at its preparation stage until around coming spring. Himeji City says visitors can see Himeji Castle as usual in principle until 11 April 2010 (= Heisei 22).
- As to sightseeing during the duration of renovation work on Himeji Castle Main Keep: page in Japanese
http://www.city.himeji.lg.jp/s60/2873652/_18374/_17910.html
(I have not yet found a counterpart in English of this page.)

If you don't mind changing hotels, it sounds better to visit the sites in geographical order:
Tokyo - Kyoto - Kinosakionsen - Himeji - Okayama - Hiroshima - Hakata (Fukuoka).
(A regular fare ticket for this route is valid for 8 days. If you take normal trains on Himeji - Okayama, the JR cost is estimated at 29,370 to 31,370 yen. )

I wonder whether you can leave from Incheon (Korea) or Kansai (Osaka).
If Narita Airport the only airport for your next destination, then one option is to do all Japan trips before Korea, and fly from Fukuoka Airport to Haneda or Narita Airport making use of discount.
You can fly from Korea to Kansai Airport to do some of your west-Japan trips, but in that case the total transportation cost may become higher.
