Early snow - near tokyo 2009/10/21
I'm in Japan 17th nov until the 9th of December. Does anybody have advice regarding
1- cheap snow resort
2- near tokyo area
3 - accessible by JR
4 - actually worth the effort

Any advice is very appreciated!

ski near tokyo 2009/10/22
Unfortunately that's a still early for Japan's ski season, and the only place that I can think of that will definitely be open during the time that you'll be here is the Karuizawa Prince. It is open for the early season from October 30th, albeit with artificial snow. Its 3000 yen weekdays/4000 yen weekends until dec 19th, and is accessible by shinkansen from Tokyo in about an hour. I'm not sure if its worth the effort though as it will have limited runs open and will be crowded on the weekends, but it may be worth it to you if the choice is ski or don't ski.

head north? 2009/10/23
Will it be any better if i headed north to sapporo or maybe to the alps around nagano?
Im guessing this place will be similar to australian snow which is more or less artificial for most of the season.
Anyway thanks for your help

heading north 2009/10/23
probably not, as you are going to be here just before the season really arrives across Japan. Karuizawa is kind of a fluke in that it really prides itself in opening early, while most other resorts won't open until mid december regardless of how north they are. You can find a whole lot more info at this site:

Sapporo 2009/10/23
You will find snow around Hokkaido. There's been a few sprinkles up high already.

You didn't say if you actually wanted to ski or just sightsee.....

Gala Yuzawa 2009/10/23
I just came across this pre-opening event at Gala Yuzawa on November 21st. You may want to check that out as Gala is the fastest and easiest resort to reach from Tokyo. Although its still a month away I'm gonna predict that it will be crowded and the snow not so good. It seems that only one lift may be open.

yeah definitely snowboarding if anything. i wish i had time to cover eveywhere but i think i might skip hokkaido given the time constraint.
only place north of tokyo im heading is to nikko for a couple days, other than that kyoto osaka koyasan okoyama hiroshima and possibly beppu and or shirahama.then all the way back as quickly as i can cover it. a loop seems like it would be bloody slow.
