Eating around Shirahama Beach, Wakayama 2009/10/22
Wakayama
I will be going to Shirahama beach area in Wakayama in end Nov 2009. Have booked an accommodation but with no meal plan. Can I check whether it is easy to find restaurant or eating outlet in this area. If yes, do these places serve expensive meal (say budget of more than 2,000 yen per person). It seems that most hotels provide stay with meal plan but very expensive. If eating out is also expensive, then maybe I will look for hotel accommodation with meal plan included. Thanks

Shirahama 2009/10/23
If you are referring to Shirarahama Beach in Shirahama, on the main road behind the beach there are a few restaurants. We ate at a small western style restaurant there at lunch time and had spaghetti. If I remember correctly, it cost us less than 1500 yen for the two of us. Don't know about dinner. It was relatively quiet when we were there during the month of April. Shirahama is said to be very popular during summer months, but I doubt it will be crowded during late Nov. The only concern is whether the eating places will remain opened during the evenings.

In town the fish market Tore Tore seems to be more popular with more people going there. We did not eat there but we saw people buying seafood and eating them in a covered patio. But I am not sure whether there are grills provided for BBQ or they are only eaten as sashimi. The market is opened till 18.30 and on one side of the market there are souvenir stores as well. The market is reached by a short city bus ride from the beach area.

Thanks for your information. Fish market tore tore seems very interesting but the webpage is in japanese. Would you be able to give me some idea where is the location of this market, eg how far from the beach area or is it near any landmark building or hotel. We are likely to be driving from Wakayama Castle area to the beach. It may be an option to us to have an early dinner at this market (closes at 18.30 hrs - how early does the market open?) before heading for our accommodation. Appreciate any advice.

Tore Tore 2009/10/23
Tore Tore Market is opened in the morning at 8.30. It is not more than 10 min drive from Shirarahama Beach area. The bus stop Toretore-ichiba-mae marks its location in the following map:

For driving, enter mapcode 184-045-309 for the rental car's GPS. It is said to have more than 700 free parking
