Driving within Hakone 2009/10/23
Hakone
Hi, during our trip in coming early Dec, we intend to be driving from Haneda airport (we will fly back from Sapporo) to Hakone, spend one night there and then drive to Gotemba outlets and to Kawaguchiko Inn for the night.

The rented car has GPS in Japanese but I don't read Japanese so depend on the entering of telephone numbers to get to each destination. My issue is for driving within Hakone is that I am not sure how to get the telephone numbers of the sightseeing locations. We'll be setting off from Pension Hakone to Owakudani (‘å—O’J) to view Mt Fuji and visit the sulphuric valley.

Could we have the telephone number of a shop located there to key into GPS or is a driving map available online?

Are there any recommendations on other sightseeing/food places to visit accessible by car in Hakone? Thought we might as well take advantage of the car since we have it. We'll be there on a Thurs/Friday so hopefully traffic is quiet as many had commented on this forum.

Driving maps:

Virtually all sightseeing spots are accessible by car:

Traffic should be quiet inside Hakone, but traffic is probably quite busy around Tokyo and Yokohama. Good luck on your way from Haneda to Hakone!

We had driven in the Hakone area, covering most of the area in 2 days. For the car's GPS, mapcodes are more precise than phone nos. which could be changed and besides, not all phone nos. are suitable for GPS. Below are mapcodes for some of the more popular sights within Hakone.

We got our rental car in Gotemba and also went to Gotemba Premium Outlets and Grinpa Park. Mapcode for the Outlets is 50 805 506 with 3500 free parking. I couldn't locate the mapcode for Grinpa Park. Their phone no. is 0559-98-1111 and here is an access map: http://www.grinpa.com/access/index.html

Also note that if you are driving, you miss the lake cruise on Ashi-ko between Togendai and Hakone-machi unless you are willing to take a round trip on the boat.
