Some JR East pass questions 2009/11/2
Hi,

I am a little confused here about the Online Reservations.

We will be using JR East to travel around Tohoku and Nagano:

(1) if we make reservations online for trains, can we collect the tickets only on the day of the train ride?

(2) if we have not collected the tickets but we cannot make it for that train we reserved (ie. late), will we be penalised?

(3) if we have the tickets but missed our train, can we re-book for another later train?

(4) alternatively, can we book our subsequent trains in Tohoku in JR stations in Tohoku or must we pre-book and collect tickets for all the trains we need throughout the stay?

Thanks!

It depends 2009/11/2
It depends.

If you are purchasing passes from outside Japan, you will be issued with a coupon to collect your tickets whenever you get into Japan.

However, rules for cancellation and refund vary depending on what type of ticket or pass you have.

I would suggest taking a good look at ticketing rules at their website to determine what the rules are for the particular ticket or pass you will be using.

Using JR East Pass 2009/11/2
Hi,

Sorry, forgot to mention. We will be using JR East Pass.

One more question, we will be going to Nagano - Jigokudani Koen (Snow Monkey Park). Where can book the portion of the train from Nagano to Yudanaka (not covered by JR Pass)?

Thanks!

JR East Pass 2009/11/2
Locoloco,
The JR East Pass is your ticket. You just enter a nonreserved car of any JR ( and some private ) train. For Limited Express and Shinkansen trains you can have a seat reservation in the reserved car for free. Try to return that free reservation when you see you will not make use of it. You can make seat reservation at any time within the validity of your Pass. This goes for reservation you make in person at a green window ticket counter at a railway station.
If you book online you must collect your seat ticket the day before travel till 21.00 h or a no-show cancellation fee will be applied.
JR trains you can only use with a seat reservation are the JR Narita Express and the shinkansen with the name Hayate or Komachi.
At Nagano you exit the JR shinkansen part of the station and before entering the private Nagano Electric Railroad station you pay your fare to Yudanaka.

No, at any time when you are in possession of your JR East Pass. Read the website's terms of use carefully:

if we have not collected the tickets but we cannot make it for that train we reserved (ie. late), will we be penalised?

Yes.

if we have the tickets but missed our train, can we re-book for another later train?

Yes.

No, there is no need to use the online system. You can also make seat reservations at railway stations. And last but not least, many trains can be used without prior seat reservations, whatsoever. Only a few trains, inclduing the Narita Express and the Hayate and Komachi trains on the Tohoku/Akita Shinkansen require seat reservations. The other trains have unreserved seats, which can be used with just your JR East Pass.
