Where to take kids for snow play?

We are traveling to Japan in Feb 2010 with 2 kids aged 5 and 7. We do not want to go skiing but do want to go to the snow to play. We want to take a day trip from Tokyo to somewhere like Nagano - where do you suggest we go to just play in the snow. Are there special places you can just play and build snowmen and possible ride sleds down a hill?
