Fastest way Miyajima to Matsuyama? 2010/1/11 11:46
Hello :)

I'm looking to depart Miyajima Island after midday on a weekday and will be heading to Matsuyama. What is the fastest mode of public transport between these two places?

By ferry via Hiroshima Port.

There is a high speed ferry from Miyajima to Hiroshima Port:

From Hiroshima Port departs the other high speed ferry to Matsuyama:

Thanks Uji. One more question 2010/2/25 09:28
Thanks Uji,

I have auto-translated the two ferries websites but can't seem to find whether either are covered by my JR pass.

I see the Miyajima to Hiroshima ferry costs 1'800 Yen, but it seems the Hiroshima to Matsuyama will cost 6'900 Yen. This seems very expensive considering I can just use trains between Miyajima to Matsuyama and will take 4.2hrs according to Hyperdia.

Can you confirm if JR pass will apply to either ferry trip? *Fingers and toes crossed*

Sorry, both ferries are operated by Setonakai Kisen, a private ferry company, and aren't covered by the JR pass.

Note that the car ferry costs "only" 3200 yen one way per person:

I see...sorta 2010/2/28 10:29
Thanks both of you :)

So can you confirm that taking the train option from Hiroshima to Matsuyama is just as paractical and alot cheaper than taking the ferry?

The ferry option dosen't seem to really save that much time anyway (at most an hour). From comparing timetables I just can't see the benefit in outlaying the extra 6'800 yen for the 'fast' ferry over the free JR train ride :S

Thanks again!

Take the high-speed ferry 2010/2/28 12:06
I think you should spend the 6,900 yen and go for the high speed ferry.

If you were to take JR then it's like taking the dogleg instead of the shortcut... a waste of time since you will have to head way out east to Okayama, then cross into Shikoku and go all the way back west to Matsuyama. On the ferry it's a straight line due south.

You're going to have much more time for sightseeing in Matsuyama if you take the high speed ferry. The extra investment is worth it.
