Itinerary and Sakura at night in Kyoto/Tokyo 2010/3/10 11:34
I will be heading on a 13 days trip to Kansai & Tokyo from Mar27-Apr8.
need to check on a few things:

1. Is it possible to cover Himeji & kobe in a day? i plan to head out early, catch the shinkansen from kyoto.
Places I plan to visit: Himeji Castle, Shin-kobe ropeway, Kitano Area, Harborland, Meriken Park,Venus Bridge.

2.May i know where are the spots for sakura lightup night viewing?
mainly in Kyoto and Tokyo?

3.Also,will Nijo-Castle OR Kinkakuji be better for sakura? I only have time to visit one..

thanks in advance!

Your itinerary 2010/3/10 14:13
Himeji and Kobe in a day: Yes, if you leave early from Kyoto and you only plan on visiting the castle while in Himeji, your plan is doable.

Cherry blossom lightups: in Kyoto, Kiyomizu Temple, Nijo Castle. There are also Cherry Blossoms in Arashiyama, and if I'm not mistaken the Keifuku Railway Randen Tram passes through Cherry Trees on the Arashiyama Line. At night the trees are illuminated and the train lights switched off in that area so that you can view the trees as you travel on the train.

Lightups in Tokyo: Ueno Park has tree lightups from March 20 to April 4.

Also, will Nijo-Castle OR Kinkakuji be better for sakura?

Nijojo Castle has a lot of later flowering yaezakura trees. Kinkakuji is not particularly famous as a cherry blossom spot.

Here is a list of cherry blossom spots in Kyoto and Tokyo with some details:

Don't think i can view the sakuras on the Keifuku Railway Randen Tram along the Arashiyama Line since i have the JR pass.
Which part exactly in Arashiyama where i can view sakura ?

will need to make some adjustment to my itinerary. its gonna be my 1st trip to Japan and i hope my itinerary would work out fine!

Of course you can. 200 yen is the flat fare on Keifuku trains.

Which part exactly in Arashiyama where i can view sakura ?

The largest concentration of trees is on the Nakanoshima island just next to the Togetsukyo Bridge:
