Mt Fuji at dawn 2010/3/11 01:48
We are traveling to Japan for the first time for two weeks at the end of July and we are very excited! One of the things that we really want to do during our trip is to climb Mt. Fuji in time to see the sunrise. In reading into it a bit, it seems as though this is not doable in just one day (besides the obvious change of day from climbing at night through to morning).

Since we are planning on traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto and to points nearby, what would be the best place to use a travel base for this side trip? Should we leave from Tokyo or from one of the nearby ryokans? We don’t want to stay at one of the huts and we would need to have a room to keep our suitcases, which area should we plan to stay at and have a restful day after our descent? Would this place allow us to get to the 5th station around 10pm or so by easily available transportation?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I recommend to go from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko 5th Station on the Yamanashi side, climb to the summit and then descend the mountain via the Fujinomiya trail to Fujinomiya 5th Station on the Shizuoka side, from where you can catch a bus to Shin-Fuji Station and catch a shinkansen to Kyoto.
