Himeji Castle renovations

I had our trip all planned out meticulously but now I have learnt that Himeji Castle will be starting MAJOR renovations during our stay! Doh!!!

Is it still worth travelling all the way from Kyoto (day trip) to see the castle covered in scaffolding and partially closed?

I think nobody knows really how covered up it will be at what time. Furthermore, you do not provide us with details about the timing of your visit. But once it is covered up, I think there are more worthwhile side trips to be made than Himeji Castle.

If Himeji Castle is all covered up, then do a day trip to Hikone Castle instead. It is also one of the four National Treasure Castles, and it's closer to Kyoto and takes less time by train than Himeji!!!
