Romantic Road and Tohoku Driving 2010/3/11 08:30
This is our 3rd trip to Japan and we are hoping to drive the Romantic Road, possibly Niigata and also some areas in Tohoku (Sendai). We are thinking about 3 weeks - from approx. 21 October to 2nd week in November.
I know it's hard to predict, but what is the likelyhood of snow at that time? We do not want to drive in those conditions, so would adjust the date if there is any chance of snowy driving conditions.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

In the mountains of the northern Tohoku region and the high elevations of the Japanese Alps and the mountains around Nikko National Park, it is not uncommon to have some snow from around early November. So, there is a slight chance of snow along some passages of the Romantic Road and possibly in the Tohoku Region.

We do not want to drive in those conditions, so would adjust the date if there is any chance of snowy driving conditions.

I would plan your itinerary in a way that you cover the places in higher elevations towards the beginning of your stay.
