Tips provided on Self Drive are fabulous. What about accommodations? We are thinking of arriving mid July for 8 nights and understand that its high season. Which hotels do you recommend en route.

Winter and spring are high seasons in Hokkaido though August is summer vacation in Japan from the latter half of July. It is the best for the drive though I also have been to Hokkaido in summer. And, And, the hotel near the ski area is very comfortable. It was comfortable in the spacious guest room. http://www.snowtomamu.jp/winter2010/english/
