In the average year, it only just starts to snow around early December, so there is a high probability that roofs will not yet be snow covered.

To give you an idea, I list the snow depth on December 1 of past years:
2009: 0 cm (no snow until 12/17)
2008: 0 cm (next snow on 12/6)
2007: 0 cm (next snow on 12/4)
2006: 0 cm (next snow on 12/2)
2005: 0 cm (next snow on 12/3)
2004: 0 cm (no snow until 12/23)
2003: 0 cm (no snow until 12/9)
2002: 7 cm
2001: 0 cm (next snow on 12/10)

Hi there,

I was in Shirakawago around the 7th of Dec last year and there was absolutely no snow! I was also hoping to see some snow capped rooftops but was too early for it.

It was still a place to visit though..hope that helps

from the data Uji posted it looks pretty much definite that there will be snow by the end of December.
