Hello! I want to go to Shikoku from Onomichi-shi this coming August. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to ride a bicycle across the Shimanami kaido. I was wondering if anyone has taken the bus across it? Or if anyone has used the ferry from Onomichi ? Is it easy to figure out schedules? Do I need to reserve in advance (this will be during O-bon)? Thanks!

No, there is no obligation to reserve in advance, but on busy days it might be a good idea. I am not sure how busy Obon will be, considering that the heat is not ideal for bicycle riding.
