The month of July is a very good time for lavender bloom. We were in Furano/Biei area on July 24 – 26 last year and saw a lot. Beside the popular and touristy Farm Tomita/Lavender East, I would suggest also going south to scenic Kanayama-ko for the only lavender field with a lake as a backdrop, very beautiful and photogenic.

If you like flowers, consider doing your trip even a bit later to see spectacular sunflower fields in Hokuryu. For sunflower, late July to early August is best.

Lavender etc. 2010/5/11 07:24
Have to agree with Wiliam, even though beginning to mid July should be the best season to see lavender. Last year the sunflowers (like everything else) did not look too good, because of the weather Hokkaido experienced (cold, lots of rain etc). We will go up there again this year (17 - 31 July, motorcycle touring) - hopefully the weather will be better than last year. Elsewise, Farm Tomita is of course a tourist (business) place - lots of people, high prices. Still it is worth a visit.
