JR pass requirements?

My mother is coming to Japan for a month starting in August.
I know that in order to qualify for the JR pass, you need to have a temporary visitor on your passport. My mother will qualify, I however, will not, since I currently have an instructor visa (re-entry permit).
However, I won't be working during the month of August, so is it possible that I could get a pass on the requirement, so that I could show my mom around Japan?
I do know someone who did get the JR pass when her family visited her while she was studying here abroad. I am wondering how often they make an exception for this rule?

Charlie,
If you have quit your job, you can switch your visa to a Temporary Visitor Visa, and get your mother to buy you a rail pass too. If you don't have a Temporary Visitor Visa in your passport, then you cannot get or use a Japan Rail Pass. It's that simple.
