Tokyo - Takayama- Kyoto. Mount Koya 2010/7/28 16:13
Does anyone know if the JRP can be used for the journey Tokyo-Takayama-Kyoto? Do you need to pay extra money?

Also, has anyone of you spent the night in a Temple in the Mount Koya? Is it worthy?

use Nankai line to Koyasan 2010/7/29 13:54
You can do the first three locations easily with the Japan rail pass. You can check the routes using Hyperdia website:

http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

From Tokyo, you can take a shinkansen Hikari ~1.5 hrs to Nagoya and then catch the Wideview Hida limited express (~2.5 hrs) to Takayama.

To get to Kyoto from Takayama, take the LImited Express back to Nagoya and catch a Hikari Shinkansen (1 hr) to Kyoto.

Getting to Koyasan is a bit more complicated using Japan rail pass. I'd follow the suggestion of the japan guide page--use the JRP to get to Osaka and catch a private rail, Nankai line to Koyasan. I'd invest in the Koyasan Free Sabic ticket (it includes the train, cablecar and bus pass for 2 consecutive days).

I stayed for a night at a temple in Koysan and it was great and memorable. The food was good, the Oku no in cemetary atmospheric, especially at night and in the early morning you're woken up to participate in a morning prayer.
