Your advice on the trip is much appreciated and is it better to travel by train or should we rent a car to travel out of Tokyo.

U have only 8 days to sightsee. Shirakawa-go, Tateyama alpine route are in Chubu (central Honshu island) whilst Shikoku is another island quite far away. In my opinion, it is not worth cramping sights in these 2 islands on such a short period.
Check out the sightseeing guide section of this website. Gives u access details on how to get to Shirakawa-go and the alpine route. Nearby places like Takayama, Kanazawa, Toyama, Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Nagano (all in Chubu) are worth visiting and would easily take up the 8 days for sightseeing.
