Late cherry blossom viewing 2010/8/17 09:11
My wife and our baby will be traveling to Japan in April next year. We will be staying in Osaka the whole ten days with the odd few days in Tokyo. We will arrive in Osaka on 17th of April which makes it a bit late for the best cherry blossom viewing. Just want to know if anyone has an idea of any areas where the trees tend to blossom later?

Osaka Mint has a lot of late flowering cherry blossoms, and it is usually open around mid April for one week:

For "mainstream" cherry blossoms you would have to travel up in elevation or into more northern latitudes. Where exactly is difficult to say right now as no forecasts for 2011 are available yet. Maybe Kanazawa or Takayama...

thanks Uji 2010/8/17 13:34
Thanks for that Uji, i did read about the Osaka mint having some late blooming trees but i also read they get some very big crowds there to view. I guess we just have to wait for the forecast early next year before we come.

Try Kitanomaru park 2010/8/17 13:43
Kitanomaru Park in Tokyo has some cherries - forget the name of the variety - that seem to bloom later than the ones in Ueno, Shinjuku etc.
Someone else may be able to confirm or give more detail on this.
