From Sapporo to Furano by bus

I'm headed to Sapporo tomorrow and want to take a day trip to Furano while I'm in hokkaido. I was looking at the highway bus and it says "reservations not needed"- does this mean tickets are only available on the day? It also says tickets are available from one month in advance, but trying at the combini you can only buy tickets tickets for the reservation needed routes. Since summer is a popular time to go to Furano obviously I am concerned about getting a seat, is it really just first-come, first-served?
