JR Pass to Kyoto or not

Hi, I'm travelling to Kyoto this December. I'll be taking a Shinkansen down from Tokyo since I'm visiting Tokyo first. My Itinerary for Kyoto, 7 days, includes excursions to Nara and Kobe. Am just wondering if it would be advisable for me to buy the JR Pass for 7 days to Kyoto since it almost equates to the amount I have to spend buying Shinkansen tickets to and fro.

The pass is really convenient and I'd recommend it. But it only pays off if you the whole return trip from Tokyo falls in those 7 days.
I.e. Leave Tokyo for Kyoto on the 1st, and return from Kyoto to Tokyo on the 7th.
