Night train from Kyoto to Tokyo 2010/9/24 11:19
Hi,

We plan to leave Kyoto to Narita on 21 Oct, evening, and taking the night train, so that we can save some time for transit.

I found that there is night train available. But is not all night train cover by the JR Pass. Please advice how to book the night train with seats/nobinobi seats from Kyoto to Tokyo, and which train that we should take.

If night train is not available, we can also travel by the night bus. Please advice which night bus that we can opt to.

Thank you.

There is no night train between Tokyo and Kyoto. The Sunrise Izumo passes through Kyoto but doesn't stop until Himeji.

For night buses check out Willer Express and their new Japan Bus Pass:

Back track a little to osaka and you can board on the sunrise seto or izumo. These trains can be hard to book sometime.
With your jr pass, go to the ticket office and book the train. Easy.

Oops, I mistakenly though you were travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto. In that case you can do as Lester recommends and catch the sunrise seto/izumo from Osaka (they're coupled together into one train at that point).

Make sure to make reservations asap, and be prepared that it may be booked out already once you reach Japan. Consider night buses as an alternative, and also that the JR pass may not save you money if you use night buses, depending on your route of course.
