Getting mobile phone on vacation?

Hi.
I'll be going to Tokyo soon for a ~2.5 months trip and I wonder how I should do with the mobile phone as I want to have one (especially for emailing).
I guess it's pretty expensive to rent one for such a long time, or maybe there are some special deals?
I wont be either working or studying there so I guess that doesn't qualify me for a alien card which I think is needed to buy one?
How do you think I should do to get one as cheap as possible? I wont use it much at all, it is mostly for a couple of events to which you are required to send a email by phone to attend, and maybe make like 10 calls in total during my stay.
