Our last day in Japan 2010/9/26 07:07
Hi! We are traveling for 9 days, starting in Tokyo and going to Hiroshima and Kyoto by JR. Our flight home is at 10:25 AM from Narita. Is it possible to take a very early train from Kyoto that morning to the airport, or do we have to take our last day in Tokyo ? Do you have other recommendations staying the last night not to far from the airport ?
Thank you very much :-)

Then it is recommended to be at the airport by around 8am. You better stay around Narita Airport for such an early departure.

Is it possible to take a very early train from Kyoto that morning to the airport, or do we have to take our last day in Tokyo ?

No, by train it is impossible. By overnight bus, it would be possible. There is even a direct one between Kyoto and Narita Airport.

Change of travel route ? 2010/9/27 04:50
Dear Uji.
Thank you for the answer..
We have only 9 days for Hiroshima, Kyoto, Five Lakes and Tokyo. With our early flight home from Narita is is maybe better to start our Japan trip in Hiroshima and travel back to Tokyo, spending our last 3 nights in Tokyo before going early to the airport ? Can we on the JR rail pass travel from Narita to Hiroshima (Maybe with a change in Tokyo)
Best regards Jesper

You can get the Narita limited express to Tokyo station then the bullet train to Hiroshima. With the JR pass you can't use Nozomi so you normally change bullet train at Kobe or Osaka I think.

This site is useful for checking trains in English. http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

It takes about 8 hours to reach Hiroshima by Japan Rail Pass from landing at Narita Airport. The last connection of the day leaves Narita Airport around 17:19. So, if your flight arrives before around 4pm, you should be able to make it within the day of arrival. But it will be a very long day of traveling!

Schedule 2010/9/27 09:56
As others have mentioned I would rework your itinerary so that your last night (at least) is in Tokyo.

Assuming your "9 days" includes your arrival and departure dates, I'd probably suggest:-
Buy 7-day JR pass in your country before arriving in Japan.

Day 1 arrive, buy NEX (one-way) + Suica package for train to Tokyo, overnight tokyo
Day 2 sightsee Tokyo, overnight Tokyo
Day 3 activate 7-day JR railpass, morning train to Kyoto (3 hours), sightsee Kyoto overnight Kyoto
Day 4 Sightsee Kyoto, overnight Kyoto
Day 5 Early day trip to Hiroshima (2 hours each way) all day Hiroshima, overnight Kyoto
Day 6 Sightsee Kyoto (or Osaka, or Nara), overnight Kyoto
Day 7 Kyoto to Fuji Five Lakes (JR train Kyoto to Mishima, JR train Mishima to Gotemba, Bus to Kawaguchiko 4 hour trip total) overnight Kawaguchiko
Day 8 Sightsee Kawaguchiko area and then head to Tokyo. Fujikyu train Kawaguchiko to Otsuki (55mins), JR train to Shinjuku (70mins)
Day 9 early (6:33am) NEX to airport arrives at 8am (free on JR pass) check-in for flight home.

If you wish to overnight in Hiroshima you could do so on Day 5. I think you can see enough of Hiroshima in a (long) day trip though, but it depends if you want to stay in Miyajima or what else you want to do there.

The NEX + Suica assumes your Tokyo hotel is somewhere near a NEX station (eg. Shinjuku) this also gives you enough Suica credit to sightsee wherever in Tokyo on Day 2. Getting a 7-day JR pass is a better option for your trip than a 14-day pass and saves you a fair amount.

Hope this helps!
