Morning prayers at temple in Kyoto.... 2010/9/26 15:59
Hi,

Can anyone rcommend a temple I can attend in Kyoto to carryout early morning prayers in the prescence of a monk.

I recently returned from Kamakura when I went for morning prayers at 05:30 am and I found the experiance both wonderful, relaxing and something I want to continue when I return to Japan in November.

I will actually hope to be visting Kyoto, Miajima, Nara, Takayama, Nikko and Kamakura, so I am hoping to find temple in these cities I an attend morning prayers at. I know Miajuima is a small islalnd so it may not have a tample for this practice.

I will vitit Kyoto, Nara, Takayama and Kamakura for sure, so maybe these are main places I hope to find a temple for early morning prayers.

Does anyone have any recommendations ot information they can give me.

Thanks you.

Regards

Thanks fmj,

I was also looking to find some temples that I can go to and have morning preyers with the monks that are in more rural areas of Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, Kamakura (I know the one I will go to in Kamakura).

Thank you for the advice and I am sure to enjoy my experiance.

Kokedera offers that, but you need a reservation by mail to do it:

If you are not interested in doing that, Myoshinji has a few subtemples that offer temple stays.

Here is a nice list of places in Kyoto to do temple stays:

Kokedera does not offer public morning prayers according to my knowledge. Just some sutra copying before the visit to the garden.

But I think that people who stay overnight at shukubo (temple lodgings), can usually participate in morning prayers. Below are lists of shukubo in Kyoto:

The list was very helopful, with prices, location phone number, and train and bus information..... Very helpful indeed, many thanks

Iwill have a good long look at these temples and see if I can visit them ans mayb stay there.

In Kamakura I went to a temple very very close to Kita Kamakura station maybe less than 50 metres away and I went there at 5:30 am for morning prayer for 1 hour. I did niot sleep there just joined the local people in morning prayer, that was great, and that is what I hope I can find also.....

The link below is appreciated, thanks you.

Thanks Uji ! 2010/9/27 15:46
Thanks Uji,

The two links are great and have many temples addresses and lots of information.

What I hope to enjoy is public morning prayers just lke I did at the temple next to Kita Kamakura station..... This was wonderful way to start the day.

Sure I am happy to stay in a temple and it would ne great, but if I can find public morning prayer that would be really great because it seemed very nice atmosphere after prayer people just waled to the train ststion and went on train to work, it was very interesting to me and I would like to try again......

Thanks for your help once again....
