I am looking to fly to Japan from the UK at the end of July 2011 returning in August.
When is the best time to buy flights
Any recommendation of airlines
I'd like to fly into a Northern airport and out of a suthern airport any recommendations

With all due respect shouldn't you be doing your homework in the UK. Once you have established which airline you might use then you find out a choice of cities that they fly to and get back to us.
Don't overlook JAL because they can fly you in and out of almost anywhere in Japan.
I fly in from Australia and my international ticket takes me to any city that they fly to.
