JR East Pass Counter Seat Reservation 2010/11/30 15:23
I have 5 days JR East Pass. Arriving on the 27th Dec, start using the JREast pass on the 30 Dec - travelling to Sendai, Yamagata and Tazawako.

And need some parts to be cleared off.

1. Could I reserve for the Shinkasen seats at the Narita airport counter and is there any form that needs to be filled?

2. How do I use the JR East Pass within the JR East lines itself - the normal lines type, just need to show the pass to the customer service staff?

Please advise!

Yes. Or online before leaving for Japan:

and is there any form that needs to be filled?

Especially if it is a complicated order, I recommend to write something down. But if the order is very straight forward and you are confident to get it across, no form is required.

How do I use the JR East Pass within the JR East lines itself - the normal lines type, just need to show the pass to the customer service staff?

Just show the pass when passing the ticket gates.

Train Seat Reservation 2010/12/1 11:41
Thanks Uji! I understand that online seat reservation needs credit card details will the system charge my card.

If I go ahead with over-the-counter booking, and I happen to miss my train, can I get another reservation? Is there additional charges? And is it possible to drop off in the middle of the journey? Then I board the next Shinkansen when my timing is suitable without reservation? Sorry for so many questions. It's my first time using the Shinkansen.

It is explained on the website:

No. But you can travel in the non-reserved section of any later train. In case of trains without non-reserved section, you can stand on board of the train.

And is it possible to drop off in the middle of the journey?

You need two tickets for riding the shinkansen:
1) base fare
2) shinkansen supplement (which includes an eventual seat reservation)

If you travel more than 100 kilometers, the base fare ticket will allow you to get on and off the train along the way as often as you wish (within the period of validity of the ticket).

However, in case of the shinkansen supplement, it is not possible to get on and off along the way. You would have to buy separate shinkansen supplement tickets for each separate sub section.
