Japan romantic road in January

Hello,
I will be in Nagano in late Jan 2011.Will it be possible to drive the romantic road during winter to Nikko?
I will go to Yamanouchi,from what I read, the route to Kusatsu is very scenic. But not sure if its drivable in winter?

No, the road between Numata and Okunikko is partially closed. You would have to make a southern detour.

Yamanouchi-Kusatsu is not part of the romantic road. Furthermore, that road is closed in winter, too. You have to travel via Karuizawa.
