Hiking in the volcanic area of Hakone 2011/2/1 03:13
I wonder if one can hike/climb in Hakone in the area of the volcanically-active Owakudani geysers to walk among them.

Is it allowed? Is it dangerous?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are some very popular trails leading through the area. But note that there are no geysers. It is not dangerous:

At Owakudani you can walk up the mountain and see the sulfur pools with lots of steam and stuff. It does smell up there but it's really nice to do.

I did it myself as well:
